IBM AI Governance

How do you make people care about AI governance?

The context

For over four years, our partnership with IBM has led us to work inside complex, interdependent systems where clarity and ethics matter just as much as innovation. Bringing warmth and humanity to their AI offerings, which have previously felt vast, technical, and often invisible.

AI solutions are rapidly evolving from practical to essential across global enterprises, accelerating workflows and redefining efficiency standards. But as AI becomes ubiquitous, security, safety and compliance need to keep up.

Concerns over AI governance are by no means paranoia. In recent years, enterprise AI failures have led to damaging headlines and customer service nightmares. A major online retailer used a hiring tool that rejected job applicants based on gender. Prompt hackers got automotive sellers’ agents to give them $1 estimates on cars.

It’s a dense topic that can easily drift into gloom and doom. As a leader of secure and ethical AI solutions, IBM needed a simple and compelling way to invoke awareness – helping business leaders tangibly understand the risk and chaos of operating AI without IBM’s watsonx Governance.

The approach

To turn something dense and complex into something compelling and simple, we needed to find a format that felt familiar and everyday. So for Think 2026, we created a digital newspaper — an experiential installation that presented real-world AI nightmares as dramatic headlines, juxtaposed against the technical expertise of IBM’s governance tools.

On the left hand side of our newspaper, each ‘story’ was brought to life in collaboration with illustrator Camilo Huinca, whose work helped us create simple, iconic scenes that evoke the essence of the issue, using only a few colors and tools. Paired with a tabloid-inspired set of headlines, these illustrations become inviting ways for business leaders to see a clear picture of the possible pitfalls of automation.

On the right hand side, carefully crafted technical diagrams loop in motion, demonstrating how IBM’s governance tools reduce risk, facilitate compliance and offer visibility into AI-generated insights and outcomes.
Together, the installation connected the human consequences of AI failure with the technical systems designed to prevent it.

The impact

As AI adoption accelerates, governance is no longer optional—it’s foundational.

Our installation helped IBM communicate a critical but often overlooked aspect of AI implementation, transforming governance from a technical requirement into a day-to-day business conversation.

Across five distinct stories, the experience captured attention through bold illustration and clear storytelling while providing enough technical depth to engage enterprise decision-makers. We made the risks of AI tangible, the value of governance visible, and IBM's leadership in responsible AI impossible to ignore.
